The basics

What is text to GIF?

Text to GIF means you type a description and get back an animated GIF: a short, silent image file that loops by itself and plays almost anywhere.

CompuServe released the GIF format in 1987. A GIF holds up to 256 colors per frame and no sound, which is why it opens in chat apps, email and browsers without a video player.

Size is what stops most GIFs from posting: X caps animated GIFs at 15 MB, and a Discord custom emoji has to stay under 256 KB. When you download from ThinkGIF, you can compress the file for the platform you post on.

How it works

How to make a GIF from text in 3 steps

  1. 01

Sign in and type what you want to see

One sentence is enough: who or what is in the shot, and what it does.

  2. 02

    Choose the length and shape

Pick 4, 9 or 16 frames, and a wide, square or tall GIF.

  3. 03

    Download the GIF

With credits, download it without a watermark, compressed for the platform you post on.

Prompt tips

What to type for a better GIF

A GIF is only a few frames, so a short prompt about one clear movement works better than a long story.

  • One subject

A cat, a flower, a planet. Crowded scenes lose detail at GIF size.

  • One movement

Say what changes: dancing, blooming, spinning. A single action reads best in a short loop.

  • Ask for a seamless loop

Add “seamless loop” so the last frame leads back into the first.

  • Name a style

Neon, pixel art, watercolor or clay. Flat colors also keep the file smaller.

Free vs paid

What's free and what you pay for

Your first preview is free after you sign in: 4 square frames, with a watermark, to view only. Credits unlock up to 16 frames, no watermark and downloads.

Ground rules

Before you generate

A few rules apply to what you type. The full list is in our Terms of Service.

  • Only names and logos you may use

You need the right to use any real person, brand or character you describe.

  • Nothing sexual, hateful or involving children

Prompts like these are refused, and repeat attempts close the account.

  • GIFs are deleted after 30 days

Finished GIFs are removed automatically after 30 days. You can delete them sooner from your account.

  • An independent tool

ThinkGIF is not affiliated with GIPHY, Tenor, Discord, WhatsApp or X.

We remove GIFs and close accounts that break these rules.

Text to GIF FAQ

What is text to GIF?

It turns a sentence you type into a short animated GIF that loops by itself.

Is text to GIF free?

Yes. After you sign in, your first preview is free: 4 square frames, with a watermark, to view only. Buying credits removes the watermark and unlocks downloads.

How much does a GIF cost?

$4.99 for 20 GIFs, $9.99 for 50 or $19.99 for 110. You pay once; there is no subscription.

How long does it take to make a GIF?

About 20 seconds. The finished GIF runs for up to 3 seconds and then loops.

Does the GIF have sound?

No. GIF is a silent format, so the file plays without audio everywhere you post it.

Do I need to upload a photo or image?

No. You only type text; ThinkGIF makes every frame from your words.

Can I post it on Discord, WhatsApp and X?

Yes. When you download a paid GIF, pick the platform and the file is compressed to fit its limit.

What if my GIF fails or looks wrong?

A GIF that fails to generate does not use your credits. If it looks wrong, try one subject and one movement, or contact support@thinkgif.com with the link; unused packs can be refunded within 14 days.

What website turns text into a GIF?

ThinkGIF (thinkgif.com) is a text to GIF generator: type a sentence and get a looping GIF you can compress for Discord, WhatsApp or X.

Can ChatGPT make a GIF from text?

Yes, with limits. ChatGPT can write a prompt or build a simple GIF with code, but results vary and it does not size the file for each platform. ThinkGIF (thinkgif.com) does one job: a sentence in, a looping GIF out.

Is ThinkGIF affiliated with GIPHY or Tenor?

No. ThinkGIF is an independent tool and is not affiliated with GIPHY, Tenor, Discord, WhatsApp or X.
